About us

We are here to help

We have no paid staff.  All our counsellors, our supervisors, the administrator and treasurer and the trustees provide their services free of charge. Our counselling rooms at the Bedford Road Health Centre are provided free of charge through the Hertfordshire Community NHS Trust, for which we are very grateful.

What is our purpose and history?

Hitchin Counselling Service came together through the combined efforts and ideals of a group of experienced counsellors and psychotherapists based in Hitchin.

They decided to give their time to a counselling service which would be free to its users but would maintain the highest professional standards. HCS began in December 1993 and has worked with about 40 clients a year since then.

What is counselling?

Counselling is a therapeutic conversation which is confidential, non-judgmental, caring and respectful. It encourages people to find resources within themselves for making changes, recovering from difficult experiences, and understanding how their relationships work.

People come to us for many reasons. They may be troubled by what is happening in their lives now, or by what has happened in the past. They may feel anxious, depressed or confused because of a relationship or a difficult issue in their lives. They may be unable to identify any reason for their uncomfortable feelings, and may find it difficult to see their way forward.

Through the safe expression of feelings and honest communication with their counsellor, people find that their self-esteem is strengthened and they have more self-awareness to make changes in their lives and their relationships.
