About Us

Hitchin Counselling Service came together through the combined efforts and ideals of a group of experienced counsellors and psychotherapists based in Hitchin.

They decided to give their time to a counselling service which would be free to its users but would maintain the highest professional standards. HCS began in December 1993 and has worked with about 40 clients a year since then. We offer long and short term counselling, to individuals over 18, living in Hitchin or its surrounding villages. We do not see couples or groups.

We cover the following area:

Great Wymondley, Hexton, Ickleford, Langley, Lilley, Little Wymondley, Offley, Pegsdon, Pirton, Preston, St Ippolyts, St Paul's Walden, Whitwell.

What is Counselling?

Counselling is a therapeutic conversation which is confidential, non-judgmental, caring and respectful. It encourages people to find resources within themselves for making changes, recovering from difficult experiences, and understanding how their relationships work.

People come to us for many reasons: they may be troubled by what is happening in their lives now, or by what has happened in the past; they may feel anxious, depressed or confused because of a relationship or a difficult issue in their lives, or they may not be able to identify any reason for their uncomfortable feelings, and may find it difficult to see their way ahead.

Through the safe expression of feelings and honest communication with their counsellor, people find that their self-esteem is strengthened and they have more self-awareness to make changes in their lives and their relationships.

The counselling we offer at HCS is weekly sessions at a set time each week. Once an agreement has been set up, we kindly ask our clients to keep to these times and not miss appointments.

The service is managed by a steering group, who are responsible for the ongoing maintenance and well-being of HCS.

We are an organisational member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy and abide by their code of ethics.

We have policies relating to Health and Safety, Equality and Diversity, Complaints, Disciplinary and Grievance procedures. Please contact our Administrator for any further information
